The Story of Kathy Sue “Rose” Swain/Artis

Kathy Sue “Rose” Swain/Artis is originally from Yazoo City, Mississippi.

I, J.G. Artis, met Kathy Sue at a roadside church my father had started himself. It all began the day she stopped and asked when we had church services; I fell in love at first sight. A few years later we were together, and even though we are not married, we are best friends, family, and in each other’s lives for the rest of our lives.
She got her nickname from the church we were in back then—it was akin to a cult. Everyone had a nickname, and hers became “Rose.” Nowadays, it’s K Rose or Kathy Rose. That is where K Rose Photography came from.
K Rose started taking photos before there were digital cameras, but she moved to digital in the early ’90s because getting film developed was costing us a small fortune. Back then, K Rose would take photos as we traveled for my work, driving an over-the-road, cross-country 18-wheeler.
Since then, she has taken photos in all but about four or five U.S. states (mostly the New England area), and we hope to cover those soon in our new tiny home, “Pp the Van.”
Well, that’s how she became my friend, my family, K Rose, and a photographer!
